advice on hard hats/ shell protection by the @safetysnails

We are snails our names are Mr Health & Mr Safety - employed by she ltd to keep them out of mischief and to provide clients with snail related health and safety topics!

Mr. Safety speaks about wearing head protection: “The head is particularly vulnerable to injury and accidents to the head are often fatal, or involve very serious injuries, such as brain damage or a fractured skull. Over the years it has been proved beyond doubt that many deaths and head injuries could have been prevented, or their severity reduced, by wearing safety helmets. By law hard hats must be worn by all persons on building and construction sites*. When wearing a hard hat always check the following points:

  • Adjust the headband to suit your head size (or protuberance).
  • Check that the outer shell and harness is in good condition, no cracks (if our shells got cracked we would die).
  • Never paint or stick labels on the shell as some paints and glues weaken the plastics used (have you ever seen a snail with a painted shell?).
  • Use a chin-strap where necessary to avoid the safety helmet falling off.
  • Do not punch holes into the shell for attaching unauthorised equipment or for ventilation (not good for snails!)
  • Attachments for ear defenders or eye protection (and eyestalks) are available and should only be used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Replace any helmet if it sustains a heavy impact, as the shell may be weakened.
  • Helmets must be in good condition and replaced according to the manufacturer's guidelines.

“But Mr. Safety we are snails with hard shells that we can retreat into, do we need to wear head protection?”  States Mr. Health.

YES MR. Health always WEAR PROTECTION!” Exclaims Mr. Safety
